What a little gem did I find in Flywheel Letterpress! {Actually, the amazing Corbyn Tyson found it, and then was generous enough to share with me}. I’ve done several jobs with them, and let me tell you… wow. Just when you begin to wonder when the “service” part fell off of the word “customer,” Dan Barron and Flywheel Letterpress come along and completely restore your hope. When I received the invites they printed for me for Haylee & Anthony’s wedding {post to come}, here’s the note I received with the package:
HOW CUTE IS THAT?! And the organic honey he sent me {from another project of his, Bee Wise Honey in Freeport} was deeliscious. Honey and a personalized note. Is there much more to say? Surely. From the prompt replies to the perfect, exact, cropping {I’m a bit of a stickler about this… I mean, if I spent the better half of an hour pushing pixels to get the margins and grids of my design juuuuust right, then I would prefer that whoever is doing me the service of cutting my jobs pay the same kind of attention to detail} … Flywheel is the way. to. go. Thanks, Dan! Keep up the great work. I’ll be back!
Fun fact: Flywheel also printed a few runs of the world-famous Field Notes journals. Check out this film about Flywheel Letterpress & the Raven’s Wing run of Field Notes by Coudal Partners. {Click here for a more extensive list of the film credits and to learn more about the creative studio that is Coudal Partners}.
OH YES! While we’re on the subject of honey {even though we’re not anymore}…
One of my favorite fun script typefaces is Honey Script. Below is an invitation I designed a while ago for sweet Hilary’s graduation so you can see it used in an application. It’s got a swingy, retro-y feel that makes me happy. Try it for yourself! You can download it from DaFont by clicking on the link above. Enjoy! xx, linds
Tip: When I use an actual script font instead of making my own, I always try to finish the ends of the important words to make it extra special. Meaning, for instance, in a pre-designed script typeface, a y doesn’t really have a swirly tail because it’s designed for another letter to be able to come after it. So, when it falls on the end of the word, I always try to draw a prettier end on it to look like how handwriting would look more naturally, instead of an abrupt ending.
Good morning! I’m off to visit my dear friend {and amazing photographer} Laura today! I’m so glad she’s finally moved to the Chicagoland area. We met through a friend and I am very thankful we did. She’s such an inspiring, creative, strong individual. You know the kind of friend that will tell you that you need to get your butt in gear? That’s Laura. But she does it in a really sweet, accenty-voice and over a cup of coffee, so it’s not so bad. Not that I’m speaking from the experience of needing to be told to get my butt in gear…
Before I go, I’ll leave you with a few more little birdies. Seems that birds and eggs must be on my mind this week {honestly, per the usual}! You’re not tired of looking at pretty birds with pretty handwriting on them, are you? Good. Me neither. {p.s. If you find yourself falling in love with the little darlings, you’re in luck! All place cards from Timeless Paper are 20% off through December. Merry Christmas to US! There are so many designs to choose from if love birds aren’t your thing. xx, a happy client}
*These are photos taken from the place cards I lettered for Lauren’s wedding. *p.s. Thanks to Emily, Timeless Paper founder, for including me in her blog!
A few weeks ago, my dear friend Louise Poska {once boss, now friend} called and asked if I’d help out with, well, the holiday project of my realistic dreams. She owns the greatest, most eclectic retail shop in Rockford, Illinois called Poska. Her shop is filled with all kinds of {quirky, edgy, beautiful, unique} accessories for your home, garden, and for you… She has an impeccable eye and I was honored to work on this holiday invitation for her.
the details: the ink color {oh, RGB…} is actually PMS 457. The invites were beautifully letterpressed by my new friends at Flywheel Letterpress. The Poska identity is a variation of their existing logo, with Louise’s signature robin’s egg blue egg. In order to make the invitation feel personal, we hand-colored the egg on all {1,300!} invitations. {Thanks to the lovely Leah for letting me solicit her help}.
Stay tuned for a post-event-post after the festivities this Saturday! {And if you live in the Chicagoland area, put on your buggy-ridin-boots and come on out!} xo, linds
Yesterday was beautiful here! Before I’d finished my florentine eggs benedict for brunch, I knew that a long walk was going to be in my day’s future. Before I knew it, I looked out the window and the sun was setting. WHAT?! I mean, it was only 4:15. I grabbed the dog and bolted out the door to get on my walking way before it was too dark in the woodsy area that I like to walk. Once I got about halfway around the park, I found myself telling Riley {he’s a dog, so he doesn’t really care, but anyway} how good my feet felt in the shoes I was wearing. Since I rushed out the door so fast, I hadn’t stopped to put any thought into my footwear… but–luckily–they were my TOMS. Score! So, on behalf of my happy feet, I wanted to write this post.
I’m not sure if you’re familiar with TOMS Shoes or not, but they are such a wonderful organization. Here’s part of their mission: “TOMS Shoes was founded on a simple premise: With every pair you purchase, TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need. One for One. Using the purchasing power of individuals to benefit the greater good is what we’re all about.” get. out. Can you beat that? For those of you that ordered a pair of TOMS a couple years ago and haven’t checked back, give them another look. They are super comphy, have more arch support than 99% of my other shoes {I’m either wearing cheap ballet flats or running shoes, so take that as you may}, and come in so many styles and colors. I have a pair of ash wedges from the summer collection, and some saffron yellow cords gifted to me by my good friend Christina. {Thanks again, Shums!} Now on my wish list are these gilded herringbone lovelies:
Check them out. Do something good for your feet, and someone else. But before you go, feast your eyes on a few photos from our wedding. The guys rocked the TOMS! {Miss Joy was probably slightly less comfy!} Beautiful pictures by lark photos, of course.
*If shoes isn’t your fancy, there are bunches of ways to be a considerate shopper and so many Fair Trade options available. Trade As One happens to be one of my favorites. {Oh! Reminds me: My friend Leah got us hooked on this delicious coffee from the Just Coffee Co-op, and couldn’t be happier with it. Such great flavor! Check out their mission and order a bag. You won’t regret it}. xx, linds
Scott and his wife Steph are two of my most favorite people in the whole entire universe. They are both unbelievable artists, amazing friends, and they’re both especially amusing. Stephanie’s voice is what angels sound like and she is a super talented writer. Scott is a crazy talented director. His ideas seem to flow like water… it seems as though he has this never-ending-pent-up-creative-idea reservoir. I love working with him. So when he asks me to help him out with a project, I say: yes, when, and where.
One of the projects Scott asked me to help out with was a series of videos he shot for the Good Friday Services at Heartland Community Church. Every year Good Friday is an incredible service, and the addition of these videos really set the tone of the evening. Each scene was used kind of like chapter divider in a movie. Scott had the vision for the shoot. He picked all of the locations, shot & edited the footage. {He totally nailed the color correction, didn’t he?!}. I did the calligraphy for the titles, which of course I love to do. But my favorite part of this shoot was definitely styling the table for the last scene.
You can check out some of Scott Zibell’s other projects on his vimeo page here. Want more? I promise you’ll be inspired by Scott’s blog, Imaging Windows, and overall inspired by he and Steph’s lives | Story Unfold.
Whatever you’re doing today, wherever you’re at, I hope you have someone in your life that inspires you. xx, linds
